Appraisal Group Announces Minden Estate Sale of Civil War and Contemporary Items on January 25

Where will you be on the weekend before Super Bowl? The action, New Orleans Appraiser David J. Goldberg announced recently, will be in Minden, a small town with a rich history in the northern part of Louisiana, where the contents of an historic home are being set out for sale on January 25.

The folks in Minden still talk about the more than 15,000 Confederate soldiers quartered at nearby Camp Magruder. They know the Red River as it today and know its history as a naval battleground between Yankees and Rebels. The January 25, 26, 27th Minden Estate Sale will give them something new to talk about. One thing is the painting of a Civil War naval battle that was found in the attic of the house and is highly regarded as a visual documentary. Housed in a gilt frame, the large oil-on-canvas depicts canon fire erupting around two war ships while lifeboats of sailors flee a sinking ship. Although the artist is unidentified, the scene is thought to be of the Red River Campaign.

For instance, two Colonial era portraits, ancestors of the historic home’s current owners, were most likely painted by a North Carolina artist before the family migrated to Louisiana. The woman is classic Americana, wearing a white cap and holding a prayer book. The gentleman, with a full head of blond hair, is clearly prosperous. Both portraits are in good condition and housed in elaborate gilt frames.

The 1870′s Gothic Revival bedstead, attributed to New York makers Pottier & Stymus has a high headboard and elaborate cartouche is surmounting an arched pediment. The foot board, lower of course, duplicates the motif.

Tiffany silver and Gorham sterling flatware, as well as a 35-piece set in original boxes, attests to grand occasions Always in style, interest is expected to be high.

Modern art by John Hulse, whose monochromatic water colors have sold at regional auction for as low as $ 500 and at Sotheby’s for as much as $ 10,000, will also be in the sale. The watercolor is of an elaborate gate opening onto field dotted with cactus.

Among the 20th-C. modern collectibles is Coca Cola memorabilia, including a vintage cooler.

Other highlights include a Hanson tubular grandfather clock with arched pediment, polychrome rolling moon face, and a brass and silver dial. There are three chiming tubes, all behind a glass door embellished with decorative wood.

Two exceptional French mantle clocks of white marble, circa 1850, are also destined for the sale, as is a black marble French mantle clock, and an 1876 Seth Thomas calendar clock.

There is also a wonderful Georgian style mahogany secretaire bookcase and an American Empire period armoire, circa 1835. An oak roll top desk with 28 fitted interior drawers and 8 pedestal drawers is an exceptionally unusual find.

Lighting includes an important bronze 18-arm chandelier, crystal candlesticks, a brass oil lamp and a wrought iron floor lamp, as well as crystal sconces and a pair of submarine lights.

A collection of North Carolina pottery, Japanese Imari, antique Chinese porcelains, an alabaster bust on a stand are are also listed among the more than 400 items to be sold in the 3-day estate sale .

According to Mr. Goldberg, the Minden, LA Estate Sale will be held on-site. There will be no Internet buying.

He promises that all is set to sell at fair market price. This is not a shop, but an estate sale; we want the walls and rooms bear when we leave Sunday,” he emphasizes. It is also important to note that the provenance on the Estate Sale properties is clear, as all the furniture, china, art, silver, clocks and vintage items are authentically from the Minden, LA family home.
