In this talk on free will, David Kelley focuses, not on the classic issue of how freedom of choice relates to causal determinism, but on the inner experience of freedom. Free will is experienced in many forms and contexts. To explore this variety, Kelley discusses three particular modes of experience: self-control of impulse, meditation, and flow. What are the similarities and differences among these experiences? In which of them is free will experienced most clearly? In addressing these questions, Kelley draws on the Objectivist theory of volition and on the work of key psychologists.

David Kelley earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from Princeton University in 1975, and later taught cognitive science and philosophy at Vassar College and Brandeis University. His books include Unrugged Individualism: The Selfish Basis of Benevolence; The Contested Legacy of Ayn Rand”; “The Evidence of the Senses; and The Art of Reasoning, one of the most widely used logic textbooks in the country.
